Seeing in Black and White

Black and White Photography Workshop

Removing the color from an image can change the viewer’s attention from the colors to things that can appear more abstract or less noticeable and now become important to the understanding of the photograph. It can show us a world that we are not used to seeing in this way. By discarding the color, we can change the interpretation of the familiar to something perhaps unfamiliar. This simplification can create interest, power, and drama where there was none, or where the color overwhelmed it all. Understanding black and white will change the way you see.

Rather than just converting your color images to black and white in post, wouldn’t it also be better if you could see the potential of a scene, portrait, or still life object as a black and white image while you were shooting?

This Black and White Photography Workshop is designed for beginning black and white photographers and will include visualizing black and white while you are looking at a color scene, seeing how to use lighting better, observing contrast, understanding brightness values of colors as they convert to black and white, as well as some post processing tips. We will have visual exercises designed to get you thinking differently while shooting. We will discuss and demonstrate how to approach an image from start to finish including some software suggestions.

Prerequisite: Students should have a basic understanding of how their camera works and bring a notebook, camera, and camera manual. Cell phones are also ok.
