Photo Encaustic

Photo Encaustic Workshop

The Photo Encaustic Process uses heated beeswax to layer over your inkjet photographs. Colored pigments can also be added. An ancient medium that pre-dates oil painting, encaustic enjoys new popularity today amongst contemporary artists. Although the wax becomes solid quickly, reheating it allows the artist to work in layers, adding photographs and collage materials into the wax as you build and manipulate your piece.  A variety of techniques like marking into the wax and filling the marks with color are used to create unique and varied textures and surfaces that cannot be duplicated with any other medium.

Join us for a fun day of learning how to work with this creative and forgiving medium during this photo encaustic workshop. Participants will layer their photographs with simple mixed media techniques to create new work with incredible diversity from any previous portfolio. There will be a presentation demonstrating several key techniques, a discussion of the photo encaustic process with lots of examples from contemporary photo artists, and a look at how abstraction, composition, design, and wax can create amazing new pieces with your photographs.

Nancy will also take time to look at your images and make suggestions on what collage materials you may want to use to compliment your artwork.  There will be plenty of time for hands-on to get the feel of the brush and heat gun. We will develop a plan for each piece you work on. This will be a great opportunity for one-on-one time with a master artist who will walk you through the process. Expect to leave with an inspired imagination and at least a couple of finished works.

All necessary materials and equipment will be supplied. Everything will be clearly explained so you are prepared with a list of things to do and to bring.  Some prep work will be required. You will be sent complete instructions for that once you are registered.

No previous art experience is necessary. This workshop is for any level of artist with emphasis on those who have never tried this process before. There will be a great handout for you to follow and use later at home.
