Lighting for Portraits, Products, Still Life and Food

Photography Lighting Workshop

This photography lighting workshop is designed for those who want to gain control over the most important element of every medium – lighting.

There will be a complete discussion and presentation of different kinds of light sources along with the pros and cons of each. This will include helpful tips on how to narrow down the selection when working with product, still life, portrait, and food photography. A variety of simple and inexpensive accessories will also be discussed.

During the hands-on session, participants will be led through a step-by-step process of how to approach and set up lighting in a controlled studio atmosphere to enhance any subject matter. Nancy will stress the thinking behind what is being done with the composition as well as how light helps to tell the story. We will also try out a whole host of accessories to shape the light. Some of these will be homemade and inexpensive versions of expensive items on the market and others will be the expensive ones so you can see if there is really a difference. Participants may bring items from home to work with for a more personal still life or can use the supplied materials.

The goal of this fun workshop is to explore lighting as a form of creative expression. Suggestions on what to bring will be sent once you are registered. You will receive a comprehensive handout to keep and study after the workshop. Some limited instruction time can be given regarding the operation of the camera but ideally, participants should already be familiar with their equipment or are ok to work on automatic or use a cell phone.
