Garden and Flower Photography

In both the man-made garden and the natural landscape, the photographer must be able to recognize beauty and record it with personal style.  They must carefully approach it in the best way by using an interesting viewpoint, good lighting, the proper lens, and interesting plant material to create a strong composition.  It’s all about controlling as many things in the photograph as you can in spite of understanding that Mother Nature is always in charge.

This full day garden and flower photography workshop will explore some of the key issues in the art of landscape and garden photography.  Nancy will share her secrets on both technique and esthetics.  She will suggest what she feels is worth shooting, how to compose a picture better with clarity, balance, and impact, how to shoot in different lighting and weather conditions, and how to get a good exposure.  Included will be many helpful tips for the traveling landscape and garden photographer such as dealing with bright sun and high contrast situations, dealing with rain and fog, when and how to use your pop-up flash, how and why to work on a tripod, what homemade accessories can you use to improve your images, and how to use color as a design element. For those who are struggling with what mode to use, there will be a brief overview of how the camera works but each student should have some familiarity with their equipment.

Students should bring cameras, instruction manual, accessories, tripods, notebook, lunch, and sample images. We will take about a half hour lunch break. There is really no time to leave the studio so you should bring lunch. Loaner tripods will be available.
