Developing Photographic Style

Photographic Style Workshop

In this intermediate level workshop participants will be introduced to a higher level of creative thinking about their work. The 4-part series will include lectures on historical and contemporary photography as well as discuss various photographic genres such as portraiture, landscape, and documentary.  Through assignments and presentations, participants will refine their creative approaches to photography in order to achieve a greater understanding of themselves as photographers.

Assignments will be given to build photographic skill sets where necessary and possibly discover hidden talents, passions, roadblocks, and ambitions. Necessary image adjustment skills will be identified. Additional topics include converting images to black and white, incorporating mixed media or AI techniques, choosing images for final themed sets, and thoughts about editing a portfolio.

The goal of this photographic style workshop is to take no more than 6 artists who feel they are creative, supportive, interesting, confident, accomplished, bright, dynamic and most of all fun to be with… to work together as a team, to inspire each other to build or expand existing portfolios, learn new techniques, stimulate creative potential, and explore new ways of looking at your life as an artist. The workshop is designed to bring a deeper understanding of your personal point of view while helping you further define your photographic or artistic style.

We will begin with a few presentations to get us thinking and talking and then collaborate on ideas and inspirations as well as review each other’s work.  There will be daily brainstorming exercises and assignments, lots of sharing, and constructive group reviews. During our discussions, we will identify existing skills while building sensory awareness and confidence. You will be encouraged to try new approaches and freely test out artistic styles that are perhaps new to fulfill your goals.

In order to have creative control over style, we will also be discussing how this can be supported technically with not only photography or mixed media techniques but also with AI and post processing as well as how to deal with the final presentation. Specific enhancement techniques will be discussed and explored to creatively interpret concepts, explore the imagination, build craftsmanship, and expand the potential of a final work for each participant. These techniques will be demonstrated and shared throughout the workshop by all participants.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of how the camera works and understanding of basic image manipulation, or knowledge of your particular art medium. This workshop is open to any photographer or other artist in any medium, and at any level, who is able to bring a portfolio of images or things to share.
