Designing a Composition for Painters and Photographers

The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create every good piece of artwork.

The elements are the content of your image…. the components of the composition and can be considered our basic tools.  The principles are what we do with the elements and how we deal with their arrangement. How we utilize these determines how successful we are in creating any work of art. 

Composition or design is a way of thinking about your piece and how you move forward to choose what to leave out and what to leave in. It is how you move around a space and make important decisions throughout the process of creating a work of art. Choosing the best point of view, lighting opportunity or manipulation, cropping, color management, and finishing techniques all involve a systematic approach to the design elements and principles. 

This Designing a Composition for Painters and Photographers workshop will begin with a lecture on the elements and principles of design as they relate to any art medium followed by a discussion and critique. Sharing work with an open discussion is a great way to expand your visual awareness. You will also receive a comprehensive handout to use for future reference.

Prerequisite: This lecture and workshop is for any beginning or intermediate level artist who is using light, color and design with their medium… that would be everyone. Please bring a couple of images or paintings where Composition is critical to the success of the piece. Or bring works where you had trouble resolving it.
